Callum's Story: My experience of watching young people’s lives change!

At Dreamscheme we depend on the invaluable support of enthusiastic volunteers like Callum who has been volunteering with us for a year now.

We asked Callum to share some of his experiences so far...

Why did you decide to become a volunteer?

"Well, I had previously worked with young people and was really interested in getting involved again. So last year, when a friend asked me to come down, I decided to get involved in Dreamscheme as a volunteer!"

What is the most rewarding part of being a volunteer?

"Being part of the team is always good! It's given me the chance to learn but also to give back where I can. More importantly, it's been great to watch the kids change and grow.

Since joining in February 2015, the year has shown me how much young people can change in a positive direction, which for me is very rewarding."

What is the most challenging thing about being a volunteer?

"I have really had to challenge myself when preparing workshops and organising activities and ice breakers for the nights. However, I have loved the experience and found myself capable of taking a workshop when needed!"

What is the highlight of your time at Dreamscheme so far?

"It has been amazing to watch the young people’s values and views change, and to see them grow throughout the year as they have been challenged in the different workshops.

I have also really enjoyed seeing the young people have fun on the trips and I've been been able to relive my youth by being able to participate in activities such as coasteering and bouldering!"

What would you say to other people thinking about becoming a volunteer?

"It might be mad at first, but volunteering at Dreamscheme has been one of my most rewarding and enjoyable experiences!

To be accepted into the group of young people was a great feeling."

I would encourage more people to volunteer and share the experience of watching young people’s lives change!
