Summer 2018 - A Recap

Well that's it!

It's hard to believe that summer 2018 has come to an end. It seemed only yesterday that the young people were getting off school, and now they are all back.

It was an action-packed summer and there was so much going on, not just within Dreamscheme. We, of course, had the World Cup in Russia which proved to be one of the best and most entertaining tournaments in recent memory.

Within Dreamscheme, we remained as busy as ever. So much planning went into this summer, so that we could make it our most amazing and memorable summer to date. In this post, we will reflect on the many activites, trips, workshops and summer schemes that we did over the summer.

During the first week of July our Milltown Group had the chance to learn so much more about their culture, and why we celebrate certain events in Northern Ireland. We also ran drop in nights, where the young people could come and chill, play some sports, and participate in educational workshops surrounding today's culture and society.

We ran trips to the Somme museum to learn more about the great sacrifice made by British soldiers. Of course the week was on during the World Cup so we had to watch a game or 10.

This July we had the amazing opportunity to once again take a group out to Camp Sonshine Portugal. What a fantastic week it was. Filled with so many unforgettable activities and new lifelong friendships made. There was so much planning put into this team, with the young people and leaders working tirelessly to put together events to raise funds for the trip. It was all worth it in the end with a memorable trip.

It's one of the most anticipated trips of the year. Or annual trip to the SuperCup NI proved to be a great day out for or Milltown, Belvoir, Braniel and Breda groups. They had the opportunity to watch the footballing stars of the future with teams such as Manchester United, Club America and Newcastle United all participating.

On the 8th of August our Braniel & Milltown groups took a trip up north to the Giants Causeway in what was a beautiful and relaxed day on the north coast. After this, they went to the Edge Watersports in Coleraine, to have a go on the massive inflatable obstacle course out on the river. It was such a fun day, and it allowed the Braniel and Milltown groups to really bond and get to know each other more.

This summer provided us with a great chance to mix in our groups and get alongside each other. We did a lot of trips, activities and workshops together and this was no exception. We want our groups to mix and interact with each other, developing relations and making new friends. We hope to combine groups in future projects!

On the topic of mixing groups, we had a joint residential to Tollymore National Outdoor centre with our Braniel and Breda groups. On the first day we had some team building excercises in the form of low ropes and high ropes, which got the groups relying on each other and communicating with each other. We also had an adventure walk around Tollymore forest park, followed by some supper and then bedtime (spoof). Overall it was a fantastic overnight stay enjoyed by all.

Over a number of weeks in July/August, our Roma group had the chance to interact with our Milltown and Braniel groups, playing football and also chatting over some Pizza! It provided the Roma group with a fantastic opportunity to interact and get to know some guys from our other group. We also had a trip to Crawfordsburn for some chill time, and also some Canoeing in the River Lagan. For many of our members it was their first time getting into a canoe!

Last, but by no means least, we had the long anticipated return of the banter week. The 2017 week proved a hit with the local community, and this year was no different. Many of our young people volunteered during the week putting their skills to use in their own community. What a fantastic opportunity it was for them to serve in the Braniel and participate in what was an incredible week. There were so many activities including a colour run, a slip and slide and hunt the leader. It was a fantastic way to top off an unforgettable summer.
